Abstract: The California Gold Rush is not merely a distant piece of history. It continues to animate California to this day. The fever of gold mining still burns all around us. We can see it in the extractions of water, land and AI that are threatening our very way of life. What do agriculture's endless pumping of groundwater and the shrinking of our attention spans and the U.S. bombs guided by the pinpoint of AI have in common? Each thing—from pistachios to mass slaughter—sprouted out of the same ground: the fertile soil that is California.
Note: Parking is available for community members. Please RSVP by April 20th and we will follow up with details.
This event is part of a Writer in Residence collaboration between the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts and the UC Merced Library.
