Description
This interactive workshop will provide graduate students and early career researchers with the knowledge needed to navigate today's increasingly complicated journal publishing landscape.
Current changes in academic publishing are among the most rapid and radical in the past 350 years. Though publishing options have expanded, costs threaten to leave authors and institutions with few affordable options due to increased Article Processing Charges (APCs) coupled with fees to publish fully Open Access (OA).
In conversation with UC Merced faculty with perspectives as authors, editors, and reviewers, participants will learn about scholarly publishing, including how journals are owned, funded, and operated. They will become familiar with each stage of the publication process and learn practical strategies for getting their work published. During discussions, participants will also discuss their publishing goals, concerns, and experiences, consider strategies to support a more sustainable and community-focused scholarly publishing system, and share aspirations for the future of academic publishing.
The focus is on understanding the journal publishing landscape and navigating the publishing process rather than manuscript writing.
