Faculty Open Forum on Elsevier Journal Negotiations In-Person

The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty, the Senate Committee on Library and Scholarly Communications (LASC), and the UC Merced Library would like to invite all faculty to the Faculty Open Forum on Elsevier Journal Negotiations.

The UC system is currently in negotiations to renew its contract with Elsevier as the current contract expires on December 31, 2018. Elsevier journals are the largest expenditure in each of the 10 UC libraries’ collections budgets, accounting for 25 percent of the UC libraries system-wide journals budget. The purpose of the UC negotiations with Elsevier is two-fold: to significantly reduce unsustainable subscription costs and to push for more open access.

Negotiations could be successful in the renewal of the existing contract with significantly reduced cost for UC and more open access, or the negotiations could result in UC potentially losing access to all 1,200 Elsevier journals.

It is important that UC Merced faculty are fully informed about these negotiations. The forum will provide an opportunity to have a conversation about why UC is negotiating with Elsevier, the potential outcomes of these negotiations, and the potential solutions should Elsevier cut off access to its journals.

The forum will also be available online via Zoom and will be recorded for later viewing. To attend the forum online, visit https://ucmerced.zoom.us/j/2092282494

Lunch will be provided for those attending in person. Please RSVP to attend in person.
